Bellamie’s Daisy

This piece was created from a photo I took of my granddaughter Bellamie last summer. Her Dad took her out to the garden and she came back happily clutching one daisy. She loved the texture of the petals and proceeded to pull them off one at a time and carefully examine each one.

I knew it was the perfect image to turn into a quilt and wanted to do so from my own original drawing. I was pleased with the sketch so transferred it to fabric and painted it with textile paints. This was no easy task as I chose to portray the striped outfit as accurately as possible.

Unfortunately, once the painting was complete it was evident that proportions of the face were off. After all the work I had done painting,  I really didn’t want to discard it. Since some elements could work better as appliqued elements, particularly the hat and daisy, I decided to cut it up and reassemble on a new background. To correct the proportions of the face I cut across under the eyes and removed a strip of fabric then hid the line by filling in with paint which pretty effectively solved the problem. I also added white petals on top and cut slits for them to slide underneath the fingers making it more realistic.
